Chapter Five

Zuriel awoke slowly. It was the strangest feeling. Returning from his meditative state after one of his resting periods was more like a slow drifting from one state of consciousness into another. What he experienced now felt as if he'd been gone completely, only to return to himself at this moment.

Did this happen to humans every time they went to sleep? Not being conscious at all was scary and would definitely take some getting used to.

He stayed still for a few moments more, trying to get to grips with his new situation. Elemiah had said he'd be fully human, but what did that mean? Exploring his surroundings through his new senses was going to be interesting.

Starting by opening his eyes didn't get him very far. The space he was in was half-dark, and the few first rays of a sunrise poured through a set of half-closed blinds somewhere to his left. There were no sounds other than his breathing.

Breathing.

Holy—not swearing was going to take more of an effort now that he had a human brain and body to deal with.

He was actually breathing. Fresh air went into his nose, down his windpipe and made his chest puff out then warmer air made its way back up, out of his lings and left his nose in a soft whoosh. What an amazing experience.

Listening to his body more carefully, he discovered a gnawing emptiness at its center. What was that? Was it hunger? He'd probably need food on a regular basis. No more easy energy recharging sessions for him.

Everything was different.

And where was he anyway?

He sat up and found himself on a leather sofa inside what looked like a living room. He was dizzy, and his sense of balance was off. God Almighty! He slapped a hand in front of his mouth even though he hadn't spoken out loud. Man, this controlling his thoughts was so much harder than it had been before.

But really, he felt entitled to a bit of a panic. His wings were gone! He should have expected that, but still. It was awfully strange to suddenly be without them. Did that mean he'd have to learn to walk all over again? That might take a while.

He lifted his head to look around. It was almost as if he'd lost part of his sight. All the colors were muted, he couldn't see through the walls or sense what was going on outside. His sense of smell was gone, as was the angelic energy that had given him strength and an ability to sense more than the five human senses could. He was wearing real clothes that chafed his skin when he moved. Jeans and one of the ubiquitous T-shirts humans loved so much. At least he wouldn't stand out too much. He lay back, still a little dizzy.

"Zuriel?" Luke's voice sounded different, deeper than before, raspier.

It made his stomach flutter. What was up with that?

"Zuriel? Are you here?" Luke's voice came from behind him.

"Yes, I'm here." His own voice sounded weird, muffled, as if he was speaking through a fog.
